Explore the Charm of Ribadeo and Its Coast
If you love walking at a relaxed pace while enjoying stunning views, this route is for you. From Amando Pérez Suites, start your journey towards the Porcillán Port. Cross the iconic Puente de los Santos over the Eo River and follow the coastal path GR-204/E-9 through Figueras to Castropol. If you're feeling adventurous, you can go even further.
The GR-204 path stretches over 90 km, but don't worry, you don’t have to do it all! I often opt for just a portion of the walk, ending in Castropol, where the beautiful views and peaceful surroundings are more than enough to make the experience worthwhile.
This coastal walk offers moderate difficulty with mostly flat terrain. Ideal for a relaxed stroll, it passes through both urban and semi-urban areas, all with magnificent views of the sea. Figueras and Castropol make perfect rest stops for a coffee or refreshment. In the summer months, you can even hop on a boat that crosses the river. And if you're tired, a taxi ride back costs about 15-20 euros.
I sometimes shorten the route depending on how I feel, but the beauty of this walk is that you can tailor it to your pace and preferences.
Your walk begins at Amando Pérez Suites, heading towards the Porcillán Marina where you can enjoy views of the gently swaying boats. Continue along the promenade and ascend the stairs for breathtaking views of the Puente de los Santos. Though the pedestrian walkway is narrow, the panoramic views of the river, Castropol, Figueras, and Ribadeo make it worthwhile.
Crossing the bridge, you'll find yourself in the charming village of Figueras, known for its large traditional Asturian houses. From here, the coastal path leads to Castropol, winding through cliffs and pine forests—ideal for nature lovers.
Once in Castropol, I recommend stopping at Peñalba Restaurant to refresh yourself on their terrace. From there, head to the port, renowned for its fresh oysters, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, especially in the off-season.
If you're still full of energy, you can continue along the path down to the small Fontela Beach. From there, climb towards the Eo River Interpretation Centre and link up with the Camino de Santiago, leading you towards Vegadeo on local roads.
This coastal walk in Ribadeo is one of my favourites, offering natural beauty and plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind. Take the time to discover it at your own pace!
